Protect people first, avoid downed wires and unstable areas, document damage from a safe location, and contact emergency services or utilities when the situation is dangerous. A service request should begin only after immediate hazards are addressed.
Handle immediate hazards first
Do not enter standing water near electrical equipment, approach downed wires, climb onto a damaged roof, or stand beneath unstable trees. Use 911 or the appropriate utility for urgent hazards.
Document from a safe location
Capture the affected area, the path water or debris took, and visible damage before temporary cleanup when it is safe to do so. Keep original files and note the date and time.

Prepare the service request
State whether the property is secure, whether utilities are on, the kind of help requested, and whether an insurer has given instructions. A contractor should not be asked to interpret coverage.
