Relay For Life: Berkeley Township Unites in the Fight Against Cancer

On a beautiful summer evening, Veterans Park in Berkeley Township, NJ, transformed into a place of hope, remembrance, and action as the community gathered for the annual Relay For Life event. With its "Woodstock" theme, the park was filled with tie-dye shirts, live music, and heartwarming stories — all dedicated to supporting the American Cancer Society's fight against cancer.

Why Relay For Life Matters

Relay For Life is more than just a fundraising event; it’s a 24-hour symbol of the ongoing fight against cancer. Teams of participants take turns walking the track, signifying that cancer never sleeps.

Funds raised during the event go directly to:

  • Cancer Research and Treatments

  • Support Services for Patients and Families

  • Education and Prevention Programs

  • Advocacy for Cancer-Fighting Legislation

“Every step we take at Relay For Life brings us closer to a world without cancer.”

Community Spirit in Action

The event kicked off with an Opening Ceremony, where volunteers and participants gathered to hear inspiring stories from cancer survivors, caregivers, and community leaders. Their testimonies served as powerful reminders of why the fight against cancer matters.

Local bands and performers kept the crowd entertained while participants walked, raising awareness with every step.

Honoring Survivors and Caregivers

A group of people sitting on folding chairs outdoors under a bright, sunny sky with a few fluffy clouds. They are gathered for an event, surrounded by green grass and trees in the background.

The most moving part of the event was the Survivor Lap, where cancer survivors proudly took the first lap around the track, receiving cheers and applause from the community.

“Walking the Survivor Lap feels like a victory celebration,” shared Linda Morris, a two-time breast cancer survivor. “We’re here because of research and because our community cares.”

The Caregiver Lap followed, honoring family members, friends, and medical professionals who support cancer patients through their most challenging times.

A Themed Celebration: Woodstock Vibes

Staying true to the "Woodstock" theme, the park buzzed with energy. Attendees wore tie-dye shirts, flower crowns, and peace signs, creating a festive atmosphere while supporting a serious cause.

Fun activities included:

  • Live Music Performances by local bands

  • Carnival Games and raffles

  • Food Trucks and Vendors offering delicious treats

The Luminaria Ceremony: A Moment of Reflection

As the sun set, the park turned quiet for the Luminaria Ceremony, a heartfelt tradition that honors loved ones lost to cancer and celebrates survivors. Personalized luminaria bags — decorated with names, messages, and drawings — lined the track, illuminated by candles, creating a path of remembrance.

“Seeing the track lit up with luminarias is emotional,” said Mark Stevens, whose wife passed away from cancer. “It’s a symbol of love, loss, and hope.”

Participants walked silent laps, reflecting on their personal connections to the cause and renewing their commitment to fight cancer.
