Brick Township Teen Jason Lajara Joins USA Football’s 17U National Team

Sixteen-year-old Jason Lajara from Brick Township, New Jersey, has made waves in the flag football world by earning a coveted spot on USA Football’s 17U Boys' Flag National Team for the second consecutive year. His journey from playing local games to representing the United States on the international stage is a testament to his skill, dedication, and passion for the game.

A Passion Ignited at Age Seven

Jason discovered his love for flag football when he was just seven years old. By the time he was nine, he was competing in tournaments, captivated by the game’s fast pace and competitive atmosphere. As a quarterback, he developed his skills with elite teams such as the Shore Savages, NY Playmakers, and THT Flag Football.

“I started playing at about 7 years old. It really became a passion when I was 9 because that was my first tournament, and I just loved the competitiveness and exciting energy it brought.” – Jason Lajara

Earning a Spot on the National Team

In June 2024, Jason attended a USA Football training camp in Charlotte, NC, where he competed against some of the top flag football players from across the country. His outstanding performance secured him a spot on the 12-player national roster.

Jason acknowledged the competitive environment but credited his success to self-confidence and hard work.

“There’s a lot of great talent from all over the country, but your mindset should be that you’re there for the right reason and have earned your spot.”

Competing on the Global Stage

Jason and his teammates competed at the prestigious Junior International Cup in Los Angeles from July 9-12, 2024. The team faced off against elite flag football squads from Canada, Japan, Mexico, and Panama.

Representing the United States on an international stage is no small feat. Jason expressed both pride and gratitude for the opportunity:

“I feel truly blessed and honored for the opportunity to represent the USA and the state of New Jersey.”

A Rising Sport with Olympic Aspirations

Flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports globally, with millions of participants across over 100 countries. The sport's inclusion in the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles highlights its growing popularity and legitimacy.

Jason views this milestone as validation of the sport’s expanding influence.

“I think it’s great flag football will debut in the 2028 Olympics! It’s a huge milestone and shows how much the game is growing.”

Looking Ahead: Dreams of Continued Success

With another USA Football season under his belt, Jason looks forward to future competitions and dreams of playing college flag football and possibly competing in the Olympics. He has one more year of eligibility for the national team and intends to give it his all.

“After this year, I still have one more year of eligibility left to try out and hopefully play for USA Football’s U.S. National Team again.”

Jason’s journey serves as an inspiring example of how passion, hard work, and dedication can turn dreams into reality, both on and off the field.
