A Week into the WOBM Christmas Classic: Celebrating High School Basketball Spirit

It's been five days since the WOBM Christmas Classic, one of New Jersey's largest high school holiday basketball tournaments, tipped off its 39th edition at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena, Toms River High School North. The energy and excitement remain high as we continue to witness the young talent of Ocean County and beyond showcasing their skills on the hardwood.

A Tradition of Excellence The WOBM Christmas Classic, a tradition since 1984, started with just eight boys teams. This year, it has grown exponentially, featuring a diverse array of teams competing for the coveted title. With the holiday season in full swing, the tournament has become a staple, drawing in crowds eager to support their local high schools.

The Tournament So Far As we approach the weekend, the boys' and girls' teams have displayed incredible athleticism and teamwork. Manasquan Boys, defending their Jim Ruhnke Bracket title, have shown why they are perennial favorites, even as they miss key players like MVP Darius Adams and senior point guard Ryan Frauenheim.

On the girls' side, major shifts have occurred with Manasquan, Red Bank Catholic, and Ewing not returning. Their absence has opened doors for teams like Brick, Middletown North, and Point Beach, who have stepped up to the challenge, bringing fresh competition to the tournament.

Teams to Watch The boys' division sees the Brick “Green Dragons” as the exciting new entrant, while stalwarts like Freehold Township, Marlboro, and Toms River North continue to impress. The girls' division, with its reshuffled lineup, has brought unexpected twists and turns, making each game a must-watch event.

Community and Camaraderie What stands out most about the WOBM Christmas Classic is its embodiment of community spirit. It's more than just a tournament; it's a gathering of families, friends, and basketball enthusiasts uniting to celebrate the talent and dedication of these young athletes. The event fosters camaraderie and school spirit, making it a cherished part of the holiday season in Ocean County.

Looking Ahead With the tournament set to conclude on December 30, the excitement is palpable. The community eagerly anticipates who will rise as champions in both divisions. The WOBM Christmas Classic is not just a testament to the young talent in New Jersey but also a celebration of sportsmanship, community, and the joy of basketball.
